Bloodroot

for orchestra (2021)
Duration: 6’

The bloodroot is an alluring flower, with silk-white petals circling around a radiantly yellow center. As it happens, it is also toxic; hidden in its stem and leaves is a blood-red juice that can cause nausea, vomiting, and scarring. (Who says that nature can’t have a sense of humor?)

Like the bloodroot, this piece is deceitful. Its sweeter moments belie a more sinister, corrosive core. Approach it at your own peril.

Bloodroot was premiered at Brevard Music Center’s 2021 Festival, conducted by Keith Lockhart.
